During a recent discussion about data quality, I heard a comment from a Finance executive that gave me pause: “It’s like high-fidelity audio, or HD video – you don’t really know it till you actually hear it or see it!” What is the value of high-quality data? A TDWI survey claims that dirty data costs US businesses a staggering $611 billion annually! The high-tech industry grapples with various versions of this problem; for example, how does one handle intra-company data quality, such as sales channel data from distribution and retail partners? A recent case study from Informatica illustrates this challenge. Cloud-based solutions for data-quality are increasingly being adopted, as noted by Mark Smith from Ventana Research.
Is it possible to assess the value of high-quality data in technology industry channels? I believe so. But like HD video, you have to experience it for yourself!
